05/30/2003 Entry: "Bettsville, OH"

Hello

As you may already know, I am one of the "new" guys. I joined up with the Roadshow in Omaha, just before RAGBRAI. Read on for my impressions so far, as well as some recent developments. I'll write this in reverse order so you can see the new info first.

As the subject of this post indicates, I am currently in Bettsville, OH, at the public library. We have about 10 more miles to go today. The current plan is to stay in a campground in Fremont, OH, tonight and tomorrow night. This will give us a FULL REST DAY to go to Cedar Point tomorrow. Thanks again to Don for the tickets.

As for the rest of today, Jesse and I met another biker, Bryan, going the other way. We stopped to rest in a park in the next town and we talked for a while. Later in the day Bryan caught up with Jesse on the road and gave us some energy bars and a donation. Thanks, Bryan.

Other than that the day has been pretty uneventful. Thanks again to Tim in Ottoville for the use of his pool and pizza. Also, thanks to the chief of police in Ottoville for helping us out with the map at 10:30 at night.

Continuing backwards in time, I really enjoyed Indiana and Illinois. They were both pretty flat and we had a good tailwind one day. The people were also very nice and interested in what we are doing. However, the scenery is not really captivating for an Iowa native.

My first week of biking was my first experience riding RAGBRAI, although I did help out when it started in Rock Rapids a few years back. It is really something else to see that many bikers trying as hard as they can to resist homemade pie in order to make it to the end town by nightfall. I talked to a few locals along the way, and it really is the highlight of their summer to see all the riders passing. Thanks again to Team Kamikaze for hauling some stuff for us on the bus and letting us hang out there.

I think we're about ready to head on to Fremont, so I'll cut this off here. I'll try to do some more frequent updating in the future.

Keep pedaling guys. You are doing a great job, but.... doesn't school start in a couple of weeks?? Just curious. School starts in Arizona, 8/14, hopefully yours starts a little later. Mark, have a Samuel Adams for me in Boston. I don't really care for lobster, so that is all yours. hugs to you, Aunt Nancy
